Mathematics

Mathematics is a highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing solution to the most intriguing problems. It is essential for everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. Our aim for teaching mathematics is that students become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry and also solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine situations.

Therefore, pupils are taught the following core mathematics skills:

• To read, write and interpret mathematical statements involving subtraction, addition, multiplication & division
• Recognise and solve problems with decimals, fractions & percentages
• Recognize, name and handle geometry, shapes & algebra
• Compare and solve word problems
• Interpret and solve problems involving money, calendars & time
• Fluency in data handling, probability & reasoning.

English

English has a very important place in society. Learning the skills of speaking and writing helps pupils to communicate their ideas and emotions to others; whilst listening and reading helps them to understand others.

Our aim of teaching English is to equip pupils with the skills required in order to enable them to have a strong command over the spoken and written word, and also to develop their interest in literature through reading.

To achieve this, we aim to teach the following core skills of English:

• Phonics & vocabulary building
• Transcription (spelling and handwriting)
• Composition (articulating and organizing ideas in speech and in writing)
• Comprehension (listening and reading )
• Grammar and punctuation
• Develop a love of reading
• Read increasingly challenging materials independently
• Express ideas verbally and confidently

Science

A high-quality science education provides the basics for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. All pupils should be taught the essential aspects of knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science.

Our aim of teaching Science is to ensure that all pupils:</p

• Develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics
• Develop an understanding of nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries, that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
• Pupils are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science today, and for the future.

SATS EXAM

SATs are standardised national tests that children take twice during their primary school life. They simply show what level your child is working at; they are not a measure of whether your child is passing or failing. SATs are taken at the end of Key Stage 1 (KS1) in Year 2, and then secondly, at the end of Key Stage 2 (KS2) in Year 6.

SATs at KS1

KS1 tests involve no external marking. They are marked by the teachers for moderation; the tests themselves tend to be fairly informal, so as not to create any undue pressure for pupils. In our tuition centre, the skills that are to be assessed at KS1 SATs are incorporated into our books, worksheets, hand-outs and homework tasks, so that the students don’t feel it is a test and they progress smoothly through the work without realising they are being assessed.

SATs at KS2

Pupils sit their formal set of SATs at KS2, in Year 6. These tests are different to those taken at KS1 and have set exam days, as well as external marking.

The skills that are taught to the students to enable them to sit SATs exam are:

• English reading comprehension
• Grammar
• Punctuation
• Spelling
• Mathematical reasoning
• Arithmetic

Extensive practice at answering examination questions under timed conditions is an essential part of preparing for SATS. We have a very strong and continuous assessment process to ensure pupils progress at a steady pace. It involves weekly and fortnightly tests, monthly assessments and end of session mock exams. These tests help both students and tutors identify areas of weakness and introduce new strategies to deal with any difficulties. This helps students gain the confidence and techniques necessary to succeed in examinations.
