The core A level practicals are assessed by our teachers, using the Common Practical Assessment Criteria (CPAC). This assessment leads to the awarding of a Practical Endorsement, on the A level certificate in addition to the overall grade. The only levels of achievement are ‘pass’ and ‘not classified’.

Practical Endorsement is not compulsory to obtain an overall grade; however, many UK universities and further educational establishments require an applicant to have passed the practical endorsement to enter an undergraduate course.

To be awarded a Pass, a learner must, by the end of the practical science assessment, consistently and routinely meet the criteria in respect of each competency listed below. A learner may demonstrate the competencies in any practical activity undertaken as part of that assessment throughout the course of study. Learners may undertake practical activities in a small group or as an individual. However, the evidence generated by each learner must demonstrate that he or she independently meets the criteria outlined below in respect of each competency.
